16 Carrera Day/Date, which not only wears large for its 43mm spec, but is also a touch too busy for many preferences. It’s all done on a slightly more subtle degree than the more assertive Cal. Particularly with the latter, as many of TAG Heuer’s modern cases exhibit cool textures, bevels, and contrasting finishes that aren’t often seen around this price point, and are always best appreciated in-hand. Stuff like “pictures do not do it justice,” “wears smaller than the specs suggest,” and the classic “punches well above its weight,” all work well here. Now, might as well just get all the usual applicable cliches out of the way right now, as there are certainly several that apply on the 55th Anniversary Carrera. But don’t get too hung up on the significance of the anniversary, as this TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Chronograph is absolutely a release worth paying attention to, and one of our favorite sport watches on the show floor thus far. On a steel bracelet, the new TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Chronograph will have a price of $4,450 in either color, or $4,300 on a perforated leather strap.A 55 year anniversary isn’t traditionally celebrated in a sense, but that hasn’t stopped TAG Heuer from using it to commemorate the latest addition to what is arguably the motorsport watch of the 20th century, and the brand’s most historically significant collection: the Carrera.

The new models are offered in a black-dial version with red highlights or blue with orange.

The subdials’ counters have also been enlarged. More luminescent material will now make help low-light legibility as the indices themselves are filled with the glowing material (as opposed to just the pips above them, as on previous models). The dials have also been tweaked, while retaining familiar traits. The brand says these lugs help the case “appear slimmer,” but the ETA/Valjoux 7750 (“Calibre 16”) automatic movement inside with a 42-hour power reserve is known to necessitate somewhat chunky cases. Now, however, these are shorter, and this should help the watch wear more easily and comfortably on a wider range of wrist sizes.

The 41mm-wide case (100m water-resistant) still features the angular lugs that connect the modern version to the Carrera’s historical roots. According to the brand, the changes are driven by legibility and wearability - and these are arguably some of the most important factors toward the longterm usefulness of a watch. The new TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Chronograph models introduce some notable design updates to the famous motorsport-themed watches. With all their vintage reissues, smartwatches, and flashy skeletonized sport watches, you might be surprised when TAG Heuer releases some relatively conservative but modern chronographs like those that largely characterized the brand over the last couple of decades.
